Sara E. Silverstone, PhD., Associate Director

Sara E. Silverstone, PhD.Dr. Silverstone was named Associate Director of the Rochester Area Colleges' Center for Excellence in Math and Science in July, 2007.  Her responsibilities include the development and admnistration of Center programs and grants as well as the coordination of math and science based educational grants among the individual RAC institutions. She is also responsible for the administration of the Center's web site.

Dr. Silverstone received her B.A. in Philosophy from SUNY College at Cortland in 1983, and her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of California at Davis in 1989. She then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland on molecular plant-microbe interactions. She has taught courses in general biology, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology and environmental health at UC Davis, California State University, Bakersfield and the State University of New York, Brockport. She directed laboratory studies and published over a dozen articles and proceedings in environmental microbiology and biotechnology. She has served as a research mentor to over 50 undergraduate and graduate students during her academic career.

In 1999, she founded Brockport Microbiology, an independent consulting and contract research firm specializing in environmental and industrial microbiology. Dr. Silverstone has consulted on projects in the areas of wastewater treatment, disinfection, industrial contamination, microbial oil prospecting and the medical impact of indoor air quality. She has written research and educational grants totaling nearly four million dollars, and directed science education programs in for high school and college teachers. She is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and the American Industrial Hygiene Association, and a consultant for the College Board,  the Educational Policy Improvement Center and Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES.
