College

The New York State Department of Education has a wealth of resources for high-school students considering college including information on financial aid, scholarships, college searches, information on admissions requirements and lots more.

The Rochester Area Colleges have much to offer for college-bound students.

Bridging the Achievement Gap

Many economically disadvantaged and minority students do not have the same opportunities for academic success as their more affluent peers. As a result, low-income, minority and first-generation college students are underrepresented in colleges.

Several local programs exist to help address this inequity and bridge the achievement gap.

Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP)
The statewide mission of the Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) is to increase the number of historically underrepresented and disadvantaged students prepared to enter college and improve their participation rate in mathematics, science, technology, health-related fields, and the licensed professions. RAC institutions with STEP programs include Monroe Community College, University of Rochester and and RIT.

Liberty Partnership Program
The program provides academic and personal support services to at-risk youth in grades 7-12 in the Rochester City School District. LPP offers academic enrichment, tutoring, college and career exploration, life skills strategies, counseling, community service opportunities, social and cultural experiences, as well as activities for parents.

Upward Bound
The Upward bound program at Monroe Community College serves high school students from low income households who are the first in their family to consider attending college leading to a bachelor's degree. The program serves Monroe, Wilson, Marshall, East, and Edison high schools in the Rochester City School District and provides tutoring, SAT & ACT test preparation, help with college applications, field trips to Rochester cultural events, visits to area colleges and a summer acdemic program.

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federal grant program designed to prepare more low income students to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.  Locally, RIT and Nazareth College have partnered with the Rochester City School District , Iglesia Education Center and the Center for Youth Services to support the Class of 2011 at Franklin Education Campus and East High School in Rochester, New York with the academic, financial, and social readiness in preparation for postsecondary education.
