Keynote Speaker:
 James Stigler, Ph.D
James Stigler is the Director of the TIMSS video studies and co-author of The Teaching Gap (Free Press, 1999) and The Learning Gap (Simon & Schuster, 1992). He holds a Masters in Education from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Michigan. He served eight years on the faculty of the University of Chicago and is currently Professor of Psychology at UCLA. He has received numerous awards for his research, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1989 and the QuEST award from the American Federation of Teachers in 1995. Dr. Stigler is best known for his observational work in classrooms, and has pioneered the use of multimedia technology for the study of classroom instruction. (top)
Workshop Tracks: Track A. Lesson Study "Lesson study" is a long term cycle of professional development for teachers widely used in Japan and introduced in the U.S. with the publication of The Teaching Gap, by Stigler and Hiebert. Workshop participants will join the Children's School of Rochester (School 15) Lesson Study Collegial Learning Circle in observing and discussing a live public lesson taught by two CSR teachers with one of their classes.

Facilitators: Dr. Makoto Yoshida, Director of the Center for Lesson Study at William Paterson University, Madison, N.J.; Paula Drake, American Federation of Teachers' National Trainer, Syracuse, NY, and Dr. Diane Barrett, Director of Graduate Programs in Mathematics, Science & Technology Education at St. John Fisher College.

Track B. Culture of Collaboration Dr. Stigler's will discuss his book, The Teaching Gap, followed by a discussion/critique of a videotaped lesson from the TIMSS Video Study. Hands-on activities that follow will enable participants to practice developing a collaborative culture in a district, school, or classroom.

Track C. Professional Learning Communities A Professional Learning Community (PLC) is a collegial group of administrators and staff who are united in their commitment to student learning. Participants will identify characteristics of successful PLCs followed by a panel discussion with members of PLCs that will address some of the obstacles and opportunities for the development and implementation of PLCs. Follow-up workshop will introduce participants to PLCs as a powerful tool for school improvement.

Session 1: Introduction to PLCs (an active workshop) Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are a powerful tool for transforming schools and refocusing our reform efforts toward student learning. In this workshop, participants will actively participate in developing examples of PLCs and identifying the important characteristics of PLCs that will help them to be successful. Throughout the session, research related to the creation and support of PLCs will be shared. Session 2: Obstacles and Opportunities (panel discussion) Hear from a diverse panel of educators regarding the practical side of successfully implementing Professional Learning Communities. These educators represent the entire range of P-16 educators – both classroom teachers and administrators. Each of the panelists will have a few minutes to briefly describe the ways PLCs are interpreted and implemented in their school or setting. The majority of the time will be focused on giving the audience an opportunity to ask questions and discuss with the panelists in an open forum. Recognition Luncheon
All conference participant are invited to a special luncheon celebrating excellence in and commitment to STEM Education. We will recognize volunteers in the community who have made our work possible and the nominees and winners of the Excellence in STEM Teaching Award, sponsored by WARDS Natural Science. We will also announce the winner of the $10,000 classroom makeover!

Professional Development Hours
All participants who attend the entire 2009 Rochester Educators Collaboration Event will be awarded five professional development seat hours from the Rochester Area Colleges' Center for Excellence in Math and Science.
